By a curious confusion, many modern critics have passed from the proposition that a masterpiece may be unpopular to the other proposition that unless it is unpopular it cannot be a masterpiece. Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse. The mediator of the inexpressible is the work of art. The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art. Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere. If you cannot be a poet, be the poem. Pay no attention to what the critics say; no statue has ever been erected to a critic. In art the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire. The role of the artist is to ask questions, not answer them. Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does, the better.
