By a curious confusion, many modern critics have passed from the proposition that a masterpiece may be unpopular to the other proposition that unless it is unpopular it cannot be a masterpiece. Pay no attention to what the critics say; no statue has ever been erected to a critic. In art the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire. The role of the artist is to ask questions, not answer them. Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does, the better.
