Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced. It is better to be unhappy and know the worst, than to be happy in a fool's paradise. Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake? A realist is an idealist who has gone through the fire and been purified. A skeptic is an idealist who has gone through the fire and been burned. The world is, of course, nothing but our conception of it. Every closed eye is not sleeping, and every open eye is not seeing. Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. Meanings are not determined by situations, but we determine ourselves by the meanings we give to situations. We suffer more in imagination than in reality.
